Mold
Litigation
If you live
in a building that is not watertight, or has leaking pipes, or is constructed
in a way that encourages water to move throughout the building's structure,
your health may by compromised. While mold spores are naturally present
everywhere, excessive mold exposure can cause a variety of health problems,
including allergies, asthma, and infections. Some molds can cause more
severe health problems.
If you suspect
that you have become sick because of mold in your apartment, first,
tell your landlord. Your landlord should at least inspect the premises
and hire a firm to evaluate and, if necessary, repair the problem.
If the landlord will not take these steps to repair the problem, you
should hire a mold remediation firm to take air samples and report
on the kinds of mold present in your living environment, and then see
your doctor and have him or her confirm that the cause of your illness
is mold exposure. If you are ill because of mold, you can sue your
landlord to force him or her to fix the problem and compensate you
for your injuries.
